A ribbon transfers the print onto the label, so it decides how long that print survives. Choose it by matching three things: the label material, what the label will face, and the printer it goes in.
The main ribbon types
| Type | MYNDS grades | Suits | Resists |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wax | 10 to 30 | Paper labels | Everyday indoor handling |
| Wax-resin | 40 and 50 | Coated paper and some synthetics | Better against smudging and scratching |
| Resin | 60 to 90 | Polyester and harsher conditions | Stronger against rubbing and chemicals |
| Washcare | 100 and 110 | Fabric care labels | Washing and garment care |
Match the ribbon to your printer
- Width: choose a ribbon at least as wide as the label, so the printhead is covered.
- Length and core: check the maximum length and core size your printer takes. Desktop printers often take shorter rolls.
- Ink side: ribbons are wound ink-in or ink-out, and your printer needs the right one.
- Printhead type: most printers use flat-head ribbon. Near-edge printers need near-edge ribbon.
Signs you have the wrong ribbon
| What you see | Likely cause | Try |
|---|---|---|
| Print smudges in handling | Ribbon too soft for the job | Move up a grade |
| Faint or patchy print on film | Ribbon does not suit the material | A resin or wax-resin grade |
| Creases across the print | Ribbon tension or setup | Check loading and settings |
| Print too heavy or filled in | Heat set too high | Lower the darkness setting |
Before you buy in volume
- Print a trial on your own label stock.
- Test it the way it will be used: rub it, and expose it to what the label will really meet.
- Scan the finished label, rather than judging it by eye.
- Store ribbons in a cool, dry place.
Common questions
Can I use one ribbon for everything?
A higher grade often works across several materials, but costs more per label. Most businesses settle on one or two grades.
Do I need a special width?
If your size is not standard, see custom-size ribbons.
Example
Illustrative: a business whose carton labels smudge in handling would usually move from wax to a wax-resin grade and run a short test.
