A mobile computer puts a scanner, screen and your application in one rugged device. It makes sense when staff record work away from a desk, and a phone is not surviving the job or not scanning fast enough.

Scanning

Choose the scan engine for the distance you work at. Standard engines suit reading at arm’s length, while long-range engines suit high racking. If most staff scan constantly, try a device with a trigger handle, as it reduces strain over a shift.

Durability

  • Sealing (IP rating): a higher number means better protection against dust and water.
  • Drop rating: compare the height and surface with your floor and working height.
  • Temperature: check this if the device goes into cold stores or outdoors.
  • Screen: check it can be read in sunlight and used with gloves if needed.

Battery and connectivity

  • Match the battery to a full shift, and check whether it can be swapped.
  • Plan multi-slot chargers for shared devices.
  • Use Wi-Fi inside your building, and choose a 4G or 5G model for work on the road.
  • Check your data network coverage where staff really work.

Software and management

  • Your app first: confirm your application runs properly on the model.
  • Android version: ask how long the device will keep receiving updates, as these devices stay in service for years.
  • Device management: with more than a few devices, plan how you will set up, update and lock them remotely.

Before you order

  • Trial one device with real staff for a full shift.
  • Scan your real labels, including the worst ones.
  • Count cases, straps, handles, chargers and spare batteries in the budget.

Example

Illustrative: a warehouse picking team might choose a keypad model with a scan handle, while a field team could choose a larger-screen rugged tablet.
